Dear Manager of The Park Hotel,
I am writing to bring to your attention a concerning incident that occurred on the morning of 8 September 2025. At approximately 8:30 AM, shortly after my husband and I checked out and departed the hotel, I realised that I had inadvertently left a small green handbag on the hook behind the door of Room 11.
I returned to the reception within two minutes, but the staff member who had processed our checkout was not present. He reappeared 3–5 minutes later through the door connecting to the restaurant area—the closest access point to Room 11—a detail that can be verified through CCTV footage. Upon informing him of the missing bag, we proceeded to search Room 11, but the handbag was no longer there. It contained my passport, £200 in cash, and a Wi-Fi device, all of which were urgently needed.
The staff member suggested that I enquire at the restaurant regarding the bag. I subsequently spoke with the restaurant manager, who confirmed that no such item had been handed in. I provided my email address and telephone number for further contact.
During a second inspection of Room 11 with my husband, I noticed an unusual occurrence: a packet of crisps, which had been left unopened upon our departure, had been opened and half-consumed. I brought this matter to the attention of your staff, as it serves as evidence that someone had entered the room after we vacated it—a fact that can again be verified via CCTV. I would also note that, as your hotel charges a £30 deposit against the consumption of minibar items, this suggests that the individual involved not only removed the bag but also helped themselves to the snacks—an act of dishonesty compounded by pettiness.
As I was preparing to contact the police, the same checkout staff member asked if I would like to review the lost property. He produced a basket containing various items, among which was my green handbag. He indicated that it had been submitted by a restaurant employee who claimed to have found it at “Table 8” the previous evening, and he presented a note reading: “restaurant table 8 07109125”
Although I was relieved to recover the bag, several inconsistencies require clarification:
1. When I initially enquired with the restaurant staff, they uniformly denied any knowledge of the bag. Furthermore, the manager confirmed that we had been seated at Table 17 on the evening of 7 September—not Table 8, as indicated on the note.
2. The Wi-Fi device inside the bag displayed a full battery charge of 100%. Given that I had used it throughout the night and recharged it only at 5:00 AM before placing it into the handbag at 8:00 AM, it would have been impossible for the device to maintain a full charge overnight had the bag indeed been in the lost property repository.
It is evident that the bag remained in Room 11 until checkout at approximately 8:00 AM. It must have been removed shortly after our departure. The absence and subsequent reappearance of the checkout staff member during this critical period understandably raise concerns.
I would therefore appreciate your assistance in investigating the following:
1. Who specifically handed the green handbag to reception?
2. Who entered Room 11 between 8:00 AM and 9:20 AM on 8 September and consumed the crisps?
3. Could the relevant CCTV footage—covering reception, corridors, and key access points—be reviewed to ascertain movements during this period?
I would like to emphasise that, although the handbag was eventually recovered, this incident serves as a salient reminder of the impact of individual actions on collective effort. The overall service at your hotel was exceptional, and our experience was largely positive. However, the conduct of one staff member can undermine the hard work and dedication of the entire team. I urge you to reinforce staff protocols to prevent such incidents from tarnishing the hotel’s well-deserved reputation.
thank you for your attention.
