The Hotel Presidente in Casco Viejo, San Jose, Costa Rica had very poor access to tour companies picking up or dropping off tourists. For some of our tours, we had to go to a nearby hotel with better access to be picked up and dropped off. We were almost always the first to be picked up for every tour and the last to be dropped off. We noticed that people staying at nicer resorts in the outer parts of the city were the last to be picked up and the first to be dropped off. This was a HUGE difference. For example, one of our pickup times was 6:00 am, but the tourists staying closer to the airport were not picked up until 7:30 am. On the return, due to the traffic, the difference was much more pronounced with the tourists staying closer to the airport being dropped off at 5:00 pm, and tourists staying downtown being dropped off at 7:00 pm. Furthermore, after we checked out, one of the bellhops offered to help me with my bags, but when I mentioned that it was my wife who needed help, he totally ignored us. However, he kept walking with us to the elevator speaking some nonsense, got into the elevator with us and said “everyone needs help” to us when we no longer needed his help, and again with no intention of helping us. In addition, on our third day, upon our return from a long excursion, we went to our room and the toilet was filled with unflushed toilet paper. One bright spot at the hotel was the restaurant staff. The waiters and waitresses were exceptional and food was great.
