As a five-star hotel, having unavoidable and noticeable mechanical noise inside the guest room is, I believe, very hard for any guest to accept. The noise comes from outside the room, and I can feel slight vibrations through the floor and the walls.
Because it is peak travel season, the hotel is unable to offer me another room. As a result, I was told that I would have to stay in this noisy room for two nights unless I paid NZD 110 or NZD 250 to upgrade my room. (Please note: the room number is 714. If anyone is assigned to this room, I strongly recommend refusing it. Of course, I believe it is the hotel’s responsibility not to offer a room with such a serious issue in the first place.)
The response from the front desk was that, unfortunately, this is an old building, so they cannot make major structural improvements, and therefore they can do nothing about the noise.
In the end, I paid NZD 110 to upgrade my room because even with earplugs, the noise was still very noticeable, and I began to feel headaches. I did not want to become unwell simply because I was placed in a noisy room.
However, this issue clearly arises from the hotel, and I believe a room change should have been offered free of charge—whether to the same room type or to an upgraded one. I am confident that in China, I would have been given a free replacement room. And with any airline, if a seat in economy class is faulty and there are no other economy seats available, the airline will upgrade the passenger, because it is their responsibility.
Those guests with rental cars should understand how the parking system works here. If not, you’ll get fined. The staff should explain clearly to first-time guests. The room is average. There is a cracking sound on the floor, which is quite loud annoying.
