Room had lots of cobwebs and when using the spa bath, black plastic/dirt came out of the jets. No central heating, stand alone radiators were placed in room.

I paid for a king bed but got two single mattresses pushed together. No phone in the room to connect with the receptionist. That being said, the food was good and the bar excellent.

I’m so glad we decided to stay at The Coal Exchange Hotel in Cardiff. I’d been given the very important job of finding a place to stay overnight for my friend’s special birthday. I didn’t really know where to start, so I compared prices of hotels in the area. I was surprised to find that the ‘budget’ hotels Premier Inn and Travelodge were no cheaper than The Coal Exchange for the given dates! I had a look at the photos and reviews and it looked perfect for a special occasion. It was steeped in history with the interior design staying true to the period in which it was built. Originally, as there were five of us, I had booked the sextuplet room. It looked amazing and we were all really excited about staying there. Unfortunately though, due to maintenance work being carried out on that part of the building, we had to change our plans to three double rooms right next to each other. The rooms were beautiful. Floor to ceiling double windows, opulent wallpaper, ornate period furniture and a lovely comfortable centrepiece bed. The bathrooms had gorgeous jacuzzi baths and stone basins. The following morning we had a delicious breakfast in Culley’s Restaurant situated inside the Coal Exchange. The staff here are very friendly and go out of their way to ensure you have the best stay. Can’t wait to go back.

Rooms where great, staff where very helpful

We were a little concerned as we walked round from the back and the hotel looked derelict, however, once we got to the front it was clear that they are renevating the other side. Rooms were very spacious, we had the budget double room but was this was bigger than a lot of hotels with a jacuzzi bath and over head shower. Didn’t eat at the restaurant or have breakfast just as this wasn’t our preference. About 5 minute walk to Mermaid Quay with lots of bars and restaurants and a half hour walk into town. Was pretty good for the money we paid for it.

Unfortunately, our stay at The Coal Exchange Hotel was very disappointing, and I would not choose to stay here again. The biggest issue by far was the bed, which was genuinely the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in. The mattress was extremely thin, with very little cushioning, and what cushioning there was felt lumpy and uneven. It was also a very small double, which felt even smaller in the large room. After a full night, we were both extremely uncomfortable, and the quality of the bed really affected our overall stay. The room itself looked impressive from a distance and, as with the photos online, initially gives a good impression. However, once you look more closely, it is clear that the hotel is starting to look tired in places. Some areas of the room did not feel particularly clean, and the room was also very dark, with surprisingly little lighting. The staff were okay overall, although there was also an issue when we checked in. We were told that we needed to pay for the room again, despite having already paid the full amount through a third party. I had to show proof of payment before this was resolved and we were told that everything was okay. I appreciate that hotels can have the occasional issue, but the bed in particular was so poor that it completely overshadowed the rest of the stay. I genuinely hope someone reads this review before booking, as I would not want anyone to have the same experience. I honestly cannot overstate how uncomfortable that bed was. Overall, unfortunately, I would not stay at The Coal Exchange Hotel again.

Initially once we arrived at the hotel, our room wasn’t quite available for another 10 to 15 minutes but the hotel gave us two free drinks to make up for this minor inconvenience which we were both very happy with! The room itself was spacious and had a partition wall separated in the two double beds which was appreciated. There was also a large Jacuzzi which was clean and had no debris while in use and made for a rather relaxing night Vista for all lovely, friendly, and kind.

Brilliant hotel close to the venue was a problem with the water cos when we got bk there was no running water for about an hour but reception gave us bottled water to boil the kettle but really enjoyed the stay would stay again

The room was spacious but dusty. My daughter sneezed a lot as she is sensitive to dust. Nevertheless breakfast was good .

Everything was good except it was quite hot in the room.
